New Plumbing Contracts coming to Newport RI

In Newport, RI for the first time ever, a state panel of plumbers embraced a new interpretation of an old state law, and voted to fine two contractors $2,500 for changing water meters for the City of Newport without hiring master plumbers.

Utility officials say that they have been hiring contractors for decades to change the water meters, and it has never been required of them to employ a master plumber.

This ruling can leave the city in a bind, because for years it has been primarily contractors bidding for these jobs, and with approximately 7,000 meters left to replace on a $2.6million dollar contract, there are no plumbers that put a bid in for the city contract.

The good news is that if there are any local plumbers that are looking for a contract in the Newport, RI area, there could be a lot of work available as these water meter needs to be replacement to fulfill this 2010 contract.
